University of Reading War Memorial, Grade II listed clock tower at London Road Campus, University of Reading, England
The University of Reading War Memorial is a clock tower standing at the entrance to the London Road Campus in Reading, England. It carries bronze panels inscribed with the names of university members who died in military service, and a bell housed within the structure.
Herbert Maryon designed the tower in 1923 and it was dedicated in June 1924 to honor those from the university who died in the First World War. It was given Grade II listed status in 1987.
Every year, the tower draws together students, staff, and alumni for remembrance ceremonies held at the campus entrance. The engraved bronze panels make the names visible to anyone passing by, giving the memorial a personal quality that goes beyond its role as a landmark.
The memorial stands at the London Road Campus entrance and can be visited at any time without charge. The bronze inscriptions are easy to read up close, and the tower can be seen from many points around the campus.
Herbert Maryon, who designed this tower, later became known worldwide for restoring the Sutton Hoo helmet, one of the most celebrated Anglo-Saxon finds. The craftsmanship he put into this memorial reflects the same careful hand he would later bring to that famous restoration.
