University of Reading War Memorial, Grade II listed clock tower at London Road Campus, University of Reading, England
University of Reading War Memorial is a 60-foot tall tower with a clock face positioned at the entrance to the London Road Campus. The structure contains a bell and bronze panels inscribed with names of those from the university community who died in military service across different conflicts.
Herbert Maryon designed the tower in 1923 and it was dedicated in June 1924 to honor university members who died in the First World War. The structure received Grade II listing recognition in 1987, acknowledging both its architectural importance and the designer's later work in historical restoration.
The memorial serves as a central gathering location for annual ceremonies and remembrance events within the University of Reading community.
The memorial sits at the campus entrance and is freely accessible at any time for visitors to view. The bronze inscriptions are clearly readable, and the tower is visible from multiple points across the campus grounds.
Herbert Maryon, the designer who created this memorial, later became renowned for restoring the Sutton Hoo helmet, one of the most significant Anglo-Saxon artifacts. His work on this tower demonstrates the skilled craftsmanship that would define his later career as a renowned restoration expert.
