Scraesdon Fort, Military fort in Antony, England.
Scraesdon Fort is a limestone fort in Antony with a pentagonal shape surrounded by a defensive moat. The walls were built to support 27 guns, with specialized gun positions on the northern side.
The fort was built in 1859 under Lord Palmerston as part of Plymouth's defense against potential French naval attacks. It was one of several defenses constructed during a period of tension between Britain and France.
The fort shows how military engineers of the 1800s thought about defense and protection. Walking through it, you can sense the practical mindset behind its design and how it was meant to serve its purpose.
The fort is open for visits, though it is sometimes used for military training activities. Check ahead before visiting as access can vary depending on current military use.
From 1893 to 1903, a small military railway ran between the fort and Wacker Quay to transport supplies. This railway connected to a similar line serving nearby Fort Tregantle and remains an interesting part of the fort's industrial past.
