Town Hall And Municipal Buildings, Grade II listed town hall in Newbury, England
The Town Hall and Municipal Buildings is a Grade II listed town hall located in Market Place, Newbury, designed in Gothic style with a prominent clock tower. The structure features an asymmetrical five-bay frontage and continues to function as the local administrative center.
The foundation stone of the current building was laid in 1876, replacing an earlier town house designed by John Wood of Bath in 1742. This 19th-century reconstruction marked the town's expansion and modernization during the Victorian era.
The council chamber displays portraits of King George III and Queen Charlotte painted by Allan Ramsay, reflecting the town's historical connection to the monarchy. These paintings remain visible reminders of how the building represents local governance and civic identity.
The building is easy to locate at Market Place and remains an active administrative center with some areas open to visitors. It is best to check ahead about access since it functions as a working government building.
The clock tower houses a Cambridge chime clock installed in 1881 by Potts of Leeds, which was funded through public subscription by residents. This collaborative effort shows how the community invested in creating a functioning landmark for the town.
