Abbotswood, Gloucestershire, English country house and Grade II listed building in Lower Swell, England.
Abbotswood is a Cotswold stone country house in Lower Swell, Gloucestershire, built in an L-shaped form with a grand interior staircase. The house is set within formal gardens designed by Edwin Lutyens, which are laid out in structured sections around the building.
The estate has origins before the Norman Conquest and passed through many hands over the centuries. In the early 20th century it was significantly remodelled, and it was during this period that Lutyens shaped the grounds around the house.
The gardens show early 20th-century English design with their careful arrangement of water features and planted areas. Visitors can see how different garden sections connect and reflect the changing seasons through planting choices.
The house sits between Upper and Lower Swell and is easy to find via the B4077. The gardens cover a good amount of ground, so comfortable shoes and enough time to walk through the different sections make the visit easier.
A wild rose found in the kitchen gardens here in the 1950s was named Rosa canina 'Abbotswood' after the property. This variety is still grown in gardens today, making it one of the few country houses to have a rose named after it.
