Texarkana, Railroad junction city in Miller County, Arkansas
Texarkana is a railroad junction city in Miller County, Arkansas, that extends across the border into Texas. State Line Avenue forms the physical dividing line between both parts of the city, with each side under the administration of a different state.
The city was founded in 1874 at the crossing of two major railroad lines, triggering rapid growth. Its location on the state border led to the development of two parallel municipalities with separate city governments.
The name emerged from combining Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana, reflecting the original vision of a city spanning three states. Residents today use public facilities and businesses on both sides of the state line as if they were part of the same neighborhood.
Visitors can walk along State Line Avenue on both sides of the border, comparing the different municipal infrastructures. Photographing at the post office on the state line is popular with tourists, as it spans both states.
The Federal Building on State Line Avenue operates as the only United States post office running simultaneously in two states. Letters postmarked here carry either an Arkansas or Texas designation depending on which counter position processes them.
