Tahquamenon Falls, Waterfall in Michigan, USA
The Tahquamenon Falls are two different falls on the Tahquamenon River.
Often referred to as Rootbeer Falls because of its natural brown color, the public became more aware of it after it was mentioned in the Song of Hiawatha by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
The Upper Fall is one of the largest east of Mississippi River and a significant cultural landmark in Michigan.
A rowboat rental service on the lower falls allows visitors to row to an island and see additional, smaller waterfalls over there.
The brown colour of the falls is caused by tannins leached from cedar swamps which the river drains.
