Blue Island stands on a glacial ridge that rises 195 meters above the surrounding prairie lands south of Chicago, Illinois.
The settlement began in 1836 when Norman Rexford established the Blue Island House, which served travelers along the Vincennes Trail.
The community reflects multiple immigration waves from Germany, Italy, Poland, Sweden, and Mexico, creating a diverse population by 1850.
The city connects to Chicago through Metra trains, providing transportation services that have operated continuously since 1852.
Early settlers named the location after the crown of trees that appeared to float above the plain covered in blue wildflowers.
