The town extends along the Contoocook River at an elevation of 219 meters, surrounded by mountains including South Pack Monadnock peak.
Established in 1760 and named after Lieutenant Peter Prescott, the settlement endured multiple attacks during the French and Indian War before fifty families settled permanently.
