New Museum, Contemporary art museum in SoHo, New York City, US.
The New Museum is a contemporary art museum in SoHo, New York City, housed in a striking building of offset rectangles on the Bowery. Seven floors provide space for rotating exhibitions with works by artists from around the world, spanning installation, painting, sculpture, and video.
Marcia Tucker founded the institution in 1977 after leaving the Whitney Museum to create a platform for younger and less well known artists. The current building on the Bowery opened in 2007, replacing earlier locations in SoHo.
Founder Marcia Tucker shaped the collection through her belief that contemporary art needs a forum for new ideas and voices. This approach shows today in the selection of works and in the way visitors move through the rooms.
The museum sits directly on the Bowery, easily reached from the Prince Street or Second Avenue station. Most galleries are accessible by elevator, and a museum shop on the ground floor offers catalogs and artist books.
Architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa received the Pritzker Prize after completing this building. The angled offset floors ensure natural light enters each room differently, and no two levels feel exactly alike.
