Fort Jay, Fort in New York City
Fort Jay is a coastal star fort on Governors Island in New York Harbor, within the borough of Manhattan in New York City.
Constructed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, it started its life as a Revolutionary War earthworks and functioned throughout the 19th century as an active military installation.
Now restored to its historic condition, it serves as a public center for Governors Island National Monument.
Before visiting, check the operating hours as they can vary depending on the season.
The cannons on the walls of the fort are purely decorative as they were never equipped for actual firing.
