It witnessed the Battle of Fort Stevens in July 1864.
The only Civil War battle fought within the current boundaries of the national capital.
Now part of the Rock Creek Park managed by the National Park Service.
Abraham Lincoln came under direct fire during the battle, an event rare for a sitting president.
