Hanson Field, Football stadium in Macomb, US
Hanson Field is an American football stadium on the campus of Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois. The field is framed by a main grandstand on one side and a natural grass hillside on the other, which can seat extra fans during games.
The stadium opened in 1950 and was named after Rock Hanson, a former university coach who also served in the Marines. A major renovation in 2007 brought new bleachers and updated facilities to the site.
Two statues stand at the stadium entrances, one of them depicting the bulldog mascot near the main gate. These figures give the place a recognizable look and show how closely football is tied to life on campus.
The stadium sits on the Western Illinois University campus and is easy to reach on foot from the main pathways. Getting there early is a good idea, especially for bigger home games when the hillside fills up fast.
From 1996 to 2004, the NFL's St. Louis Rams held their summer training camp on this field. During those years, professional football fans traveled to Macomb just to watch their team practice in person.
