Henry Vilas Zoo

Henry Vilas Zoo is a nonprofit facility spread across spacious grounds with exhibits housing polar bears, grizzly bears, harbor seals, primates, and other animal species. The different viewing areas allow visitors to observe the animals up close throughout their visit.

The zoo was established in 1911 following a land donation in 1904 made in memory of a deceased family member. This founding moment helped establish Madison as a city with significant cultural institutions.

The Wisconsin Heritage section displays native badgers and cranes while showing how these animals connect to the region's past. Visitors can learn how local wildlife has shaped the identity of the area.

The grounds are free to visit year-round, allowing you to move at a comfortable pace through the different sections. The paths are clearly marked, making navigation easy and allowing you to access all areas without difficulty.

The Arctic Passage area uses rainwater harvesting and offers underwater viewing windows to watch marine mammals in their simulated habitat. This thoughtful design brings together environmental responsibility and wildlife observation.
