Hollywood Cemetery, Military cemetery in Oregon Hill, Richmond, US
Hollywood Cemetery is a burial ground in Oregon Hill, Richmond, covering more than 130 acres of rolling terrain that reaches down to the James River. Winding paths move under old oaks and past stone chapels and freestanding graves scattered across several terraces.
Founded in 1847, the cemetery contains burial grounds for over 11,000 Confederate soldiers and two United States presidents, James Monroe and John Tyler.
The grounds mix different styles, from plain markers to multi-story family mausoleums, showing how ideas about remembrance shifted over time. Some families still own their plots and maintain burial chambers whose keys have been passed down for generations.
The paths are almost all packed gravel and easy to manage on foot or with wheels as long as you stay on main routes. Some areas with older stones sit on wetter grass that can become slippery after rain.
Several thousand soldiers lie in numbered rows without names because their identity was lost after burial. The office keeps records attempting to link individual graves, but many remain unknown.
