Hobbs Observatory, observatorio astronómico de Estados Unidos
Hobbs Observatory is an astronomical observatory in Wisconsin with two domes housing large telescopes for viewing the night sky. The facility features a 24-inch Newtonian reflector built in 1980 and a 14-inch Schmidt Cassegrain added in 1989, both controlled by computer systems to help visitors locate and observe celestial objects.
The Chippewa Valley Astronomical Society founded this facility in 1980 and has grown to over 50 members today. One of the telescopes, known as Big Bird, was originally part of a weapons testing program at Edwards Air Force Base in the 1960s and was donated to the facility in 1983 as surplus equipment.
Hobbs Observatory was established by the Chippewa Valley Astronomical Society as a community gathering place for learning about the night sky. The volunteers who operate the facility share their passion for astronomy with visitors of all ages, creating a welcoming space where curiosity about space can flourish.
The facility opens Saturday evenings from May through October, about 30 to 45 minutes after sunset, with no advance registration required though donations are appreciated. Visitors should avoid bright flashlights and camera flashes to protect their night vision, and the site uses red lights to help eyes adjust to darkness.
One of the observatory's main instruments is Big Bird, a large yellow telescope originally used for weapons testing at Edwards Air Force Base during the 1960s. After being donated as surplus equipment in 1983, it now helps visitors see distant planets and stars with remarkable clarity.
