Howe Caverns

Howe Caverns is a limestone cave that descends roughly 150 feet below ground and features passages lit by electric lights that reflect off the underground River Styx. The site includes walking trails through the cavern chambers and a boat route across the subterranean waterway.

A farmer named Lester Howe discovered the cave entrance in 1842 after spotting cool air rising from a hole at the base of a nearby hill. The discovery led to its development as a tourist attraction, becoming one of the first show caves in America.

The cave walls display signatures carved by visitors from the 1800s, showing how this underground space has drawn people seeking adventure for generations. You can see these marks alongside remnants of early tourism, connecting you to a long tradition of exploration.

The tour route includes roughly 2 kilometers of walking through the cave chambers followed by a boat ride on the underground river. Wear comfortable walking shoes since the ground is uneven and the path has varying levels of difficulty in different sections.

The cave maintains a steady temperature of about 52 degrees Fahrenheit (11°C) year-round, regardless of the season or outside weather. This constant coolness remains a striking feature that visitors notice immediately upon entering.
