Ipswich Range Lights, Leading lights at Crane Beach, Massachusetts, US
Ipswich Range Lights are two navigational towers located at Crane Beach that stand about 542 feet (165 meters) apart. They mark the harbor entrance and guide maritime traffic safely into the waterway.
Two brick towers were constructed in 1837 and began operation that December, serving maritime navigation for generations. The rear tower built from cast iron in 1881 was later relocated to Edgartown where it replaced a damaged lighthouse.
Multiple lighthouse keepers maintained these structures through storms and harsh conditions, performing rescues and protecting vessels entering Ipswich Harbor.
The front tower is a modern skeletal structure emitting white light every four seconds from about 30 feet high. These are active navigational aids best viewed from a distance for safety and to see them clearly against the sky.
A cast-iron tower built in 1881 found a second life elsewhere after being decommissioned from this location. It eventually made its way to Edgartown where it continues to serve as a navigational aid.
