Joseph Haile House, Historic house in College Hill, Providence, United States
The Joseph Haile House is a three-and-a-half-story brick residence on George Street with a raised basement and Federal-style architectural details. The exterior displays clean lines and proportioned windows typical of prosperous homes built in the early 1800s.
This residence was built in 1806 during a period of economic growth in Providence. Its recognition on the National Register in 1972 acknowledged its significance in the city's architectural heritage.
The name honors a prominent local family that was part of Providence society for generations. Inside, the rooms show how wealthy households lived and organized their daily lives during the Federal period.
Located on George Street in College Hill, the house is easily reached on foot and sits among other historic sites in the neighborhood. Since it now serves as accommodation for university guests, the interior is not open to regular visitors.
Although the building has three main stories, it appears taller because it sits elevated on a hill that rises above street level. This natural height advantage gave the residence a more commanding visual presence among surrounding properties.
