Loomis Chaffee School, Private university-preparatory school in Windsor, Connecticut.
Loomis Chaffee is a private college-preparatory school located on a spacious campus in Connecticut. The grounds contain academic buildings, athletic facilities, and residential areas where students and teachers live and work.
The school grew from two separate beginnings: one institution was founded by five siblings from the Loomis family in 1874, and another was started in 1914 by James Chaffee Loomis and Osbert Burr Loomis. Eventually these two schools came together.
Students from around the world study together here, creating a learning environment shaped by many different perspectives and backgrounds. This mix of people from different countries and regions influences how the community works every day.
The campus is open to view, but visitors should call ahead to check if parts are available, as many areas are used for classes and activities. Visiting outside school hours gives you a quieter time to walk around.
For the first 40 years, attending the school was free, funded by a generous donation of more than a million dollars from John Mason Loomis's widow. This made the school available to many families who could not otherwise afford a private education.
