Midwest Central Railroad, Historic railroad tour in Mount Pleasant, United States
The Midwest Central Railroad is a heritage railroad in McMillan Park in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, running steam locomotives on a loop track. The collection includes several working engines, among them Shay and Baldwin models, as well as Ford-based vehicles converted to run on rails.
The railroad was founded in 1959 by the Midwest Old Threshers, a group dedicated to keeping historic farm equipment alive. One of the first acquisitions was a German-built locomotive, which became the starting point for the collection that grew over the following decades.
The locomotives on display come from several countries, showing how different parts of the world approached railroad engineering. Visitors can walk alongside the engines and get a close look at the mechanical details that set each model apart.
Train rides run in good weather, and waits can be longer during the large annual fair held on the grounds each summer. Since most of the visit takes place outdoors, comfortable shoes and something to protect against rain are worth bringing along.
Among the more unusual items in the collection are old automobile trailers fitted with railroad wheels so they can run on the tracks. This kind of conversion was a creative way for enthusiasts to give retired road vehicles a second life on rails.
