Mine Creek Battlefield State Historic Site
Mine Creek Battlefield State Historic Site, Civil War battlefield site in Linn County, Kansas.
Mine Creek Battlefield is a Civil War site in Linn County covering about 326 acres of preserved land. Mounted troops from both armies clashed here in cavalry engagements across open terrain.
Union and Confederate forces collided here in October 1864, shifting the course of warfare in the region. The outcome marked a turning point for control and influence over this part of the state.
The site reflects Kansas's involvement in the Civil War and how the conflict extended into the border region. Visitors encounter military uniforms and weapons in the center that reveal the experiences of soldiers from both sides.
Visitors can walk marked trails and stop at observation points to see across the battlefield. The warmer months offer the easiest access for exploring the grounds on foot.
This battle ranked among the largest cavalry engagements of the entire war and resulted in the capture of a senior Confederate general. Visitors often overlook how this particular clash influenced the broader conflict in Missouri and Kansas.
