Mount Orient, Mountain summit in Pelham, Massachusetts
Mount Orient is a mountain summit in Pelham, Massachusetts, rising to about 955 feet above sea level with a south-facing exposed ridge. From the top, you can see across to the Holyoke Range and down into the Pioneer Valley.
The forest surrounding the mountain was established in 1960 when the land was donated to Amherst College to protect the natural landscape. The rock beneath consists of ancient metamorphic formations shaped over geological time.
Two major hiking paths, the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail and Robert Frost Trail, intersect at Mount Orient, drawing numerous outdoor enthusiasts throughout the year.
Access to the mountain is through a parking area along Pelham Road on the eastern side of Amherst that serves the Amethyst Brook Conservation Area. The trail from there leads upward through forest to reach the exposed ledge at the summit.
Two regional hiking trails intersect at this summit: the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail and the Robert Frost Trail, making it a natural junction point for hikers. This crossing allows visitors to connect different routes and explore longer paths through the area.
