Naumkeag, Historic estate in Stockbridge, United States.
Naumkeag is an estate in Stockbridge that consists of a large mansion and extensive gardens spread across 48 acres. The landscape includes formal terraces, sculptures, and eight distinct outdoor spaces that were designed by renowned landscape architect Fletcher Steele.
The mansion was designed in the late 19th century by architect Stanford White as a summer home for Joseph Choate, a prominent New York attorney. The gardens were later reshaped and expanded by Fletcher Steele, transforming the original landscape.
The estate reflects the artistic tastes of wealthy families during the Gilded Age who used it as a retreat for leisure and social gatherings. The buildings and gardens show how these families expressed their wealth and personal interests.
The property is open for guided tours from May through October, with special evening programs offered during summer months. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes, as the terrain is uneven and requires considerable walking.
The Blue Steps are a series of deep blue fountain pools flanked by white birch trees, creating a striking visual contrast. This unusual feature shows Steele's creative approach to garden design.
