New York Military Academy, Military academy in Cornwall-on-Hudson, United States
The New York Military Academy is a military educational institution in Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York State, operating on a 135-acre campus with classroom buildings, training facilities, and residential areas. The campus connects classrooms with sports fields, a parade ground, and several dormitories arranged by functional criteria.
Charles Jefferson Wright founded the school in 1889 after his return from the Civil War and introduced military training methods for young men. The institution admitted girls for the first time in 1975, expanding its reach beyond the original boys-only school.
The cadet structure organizes students into military units with their own chain of command throughout the day. Uniforms are worn in class and during daily formations, while the campus follows military order principles in its layout.
Classes remain small and allow direct support from instructors throughout the school year. Visitors should register in advance since the campus is reserved for training and ceremonies at certain times.
The academy still trains using methods dating from the 19th century but combines them with computer labs and digital curricula. Some graduates from the school later reached high positions in business and politics, though the institution itself lies away from major cities.
