Orpheum Theatre, Historic theatre in Sioux City, United States.
The Orpheum Theatre is a historic performance venue in downtown Sioux City, Iowa, known for its Art Deco and Neo-Classical interior details. Ornamental plasterwork, gilded accents, and a large auditorium with a balcony define the look of the main hall.
The building was designed by Rapp and Rapp, a firm that specialized in theater construction, and opened in 1927 as a vaudeville house. Over the following decades it became a movie palace, then was restored to live performance use.
The Orpheum draws audiences from across the region for Broadway shows, concerts, and dance performances held throughout the year. Inside, the decorated ceilings and balcony fronts give every event a sense of occasion that a modern venue rarely matches.
The theater sits in the heart of downtown Sioux City and is easy to reach on foot from nearby hotels and restaurants. Booking seats in advance is a good idea, as popular shows tend to sell out well before the performance date.
Rapp and Rapp designed over 100 theaters across the United States during their career, and the Sioux City Orpheum is one of the few surviving examples still in active use. The theater is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means its interior details must be preserved during any renovation work.
