Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park, Civil War battlefield park in Prairie Grove, Arkansas.
Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park is a state park in Arkansas that protects the site of a major Civil War battle and includes several historic structures spread across the grounds. Hindman Hall Museum sits at the center of the park and displays original artifacts recovered from the site, with walking trails connecting the main points of interest.
The battle was fought on December 7, 1862, and was one of the bloodiest clashes in Northwest Arkansas, with heavy casualties on both the Union and Confederate sides. The outcome helped secure Union control over the region for the rest of the war.
Every other December, the park hosts a large reenactment where participants in period uniforms recreate the 1862 fighting across the open grounds. Watching the event gives visitors a clear sense of how the battle unfolded across the landscape.
The grounds are flat and easy to walk, with clear signs pointing to the main sites and structures. Starting at the museum gives a good overview before heading out on the trails that cross the open fields.
Several of the historic buildings in the park were already standing on this ground during the 1862 fighting and remain in their original positions today. One of them was used as a field hospital during the battle, and visitors can step inside to see how it looked at the time.
