Roanoke City Market Historic District, Historic marketplace in Downtown Roanoke, United States.
Roanoke City Market Historic District is a 16-acre area containing more than 50 buildings from different historical periods. The central Market Building is surrounded by structures that reflect the architectural styles of the late 1800s and early 1900s.
The district began in the 1880s when the Norfolk and Western Railway chose the location as a headquarters, triggering the town's growth from Big Lick to Roanoke. This railroad decision sparked rapid development and construction of buildings that still define the neighborhood today.
The place serves as a gathering point where local producers and shoppers connect directly with each other daily. This social function has made it a center for community interaction and regional trade for generations.
The area is easy to walk through and accessible throughout the day, with ample parking both at street level and in nearby lots. Visitors should come during daytime hours when shops and market vendors are most active.
The neighborhood contains notable buildings such as the Hartsook Building from 1897 and the Lampros Building from 1909 that showcase the craftsmanship of the railroad era. These structures display in their design the building techniques and materials typical of that period.
