Saint Anthony's Hospital, hospital in Arkansas, United States
Saint Anthony's Hospital is a three-story brick and stone building in Morrilton designed in Art Deco style with symmetrical wings and a stepped stone frontispiece at the entrance. The interior features a large lobby with a curved staircase at the center and was originally built with 29 rooms, a laboratory, and two operating rooms.
The hospital was founded in 1925 by Benedictine sisters and relocated several times before getting its own building in 1937. A third floor was added in 1949, but it closed in 1970 when a new county hospital opened nearby.
The building was started by Benedictine sisters from a local monastery who wanted to provide medical care to the community. Their effort shaped how healthcare developed in Morrilton for generations.
The building sits on East Green Street and is easy to spot because of its size and distinctive architecture in town. Today it serves as housing for seniors aged 55 and older, but the exterior and historic details are worth observing from the street.
Architect Arthur Neal McAninch was known for his work on various Arkansas buildings, and this hospital shows his skill in blending functional spaces with elegant design. The curved ceiling above the central staircase creates a surprisingly dramatic effect in an otherwise practical building.
