Sacred Heart Cathedral, Gothic Revival cathedral in Raleigh, North Carolina, US
The granite structure features pointed arches, lancet windows, and a corner tower topped with a prominent spire on Hillsborough Street.
The cathedral opened in 1924 as the Mother Church for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Raleigh, serving eastern North Carolina's Catholic population.
The cathedral school made history in 1953 by desegregating its student body, leading other institutions to refuse sports competitions until 1955.
The building maintains a capacity of 350 people and continues to host daily masses, weddings, and funerals for the local Catholic community.
This structure held the distinction of being the smallest cathedral in the continental United States until 2017.
