Briggs Hardware Building, Historic commercial building in downtown Raleigh, United States.

The four-story red brick Briggs Hardware Building features light accents, medieval-inspired hoods, and drip molds over its windows on Fayetteville Street.

Built in 1874, the structure remained the tallest building in Raleigh for 33 years and housed the original Briggs Hardware store until 1995.

The upper floors of this commercial building contained the city's first YMCA and served as a practice space for the Oak City Guard.

The building relies on a central skylight opening for natural illumination since its design includes no side windows along the city block.

Thomas Briggs reportedly financed the construction using gold and silver coins he had buried during the Civil War to protect from Union confiscation.
