Shaw Mansion

Shaw Mansion is a three-story granite residence in New London, Connecticut, featuring six bays across its front elevation. A single-story porch spans the entire facade, framing the main entrance with Georgian-style proportions and symmetry.

The mansion was built in 1756 for Nathaniel Shaw Sr. and became Connecticut's naval command center during the American Revolutionary War. Its location and structure made it a strategic administrative headquarters for maritime operations.

The house was a center for maritime commerce and naval affairs in colonial times. Visitors can still see the skilled craftsmanship throughout the building in its wooden staircases and interior details.

The mansion is located on Blinman Street in downtown New London, positioned between Bank and Brewer Streets. The New London County Historical Society operates it as a museum, making the building accessible to the public.

During a fire threatening the building, a neighbor famously saved it using vinegar, an unusual method that became part of local lore. The story remains a curious detail that visitors often learn about when exploring the site.
