Toney's Brook, Tributary stream in Montclair, New Jersey, US

Toney's Brook is a tributary stream that flows through multiple parks in Essex County, including Anderson Park, Edgemont Memorial Park, and Glenfield Park. The stream eventually joins the Second River, creating a connected waterway that ties these green spaces together.

During the Industrial Revolution, the stream powered mills that produced lumber, beer, calico, brass fittings, and pasteboard boxes for local industries. These factories were central to the economic growth of the region during the 1800s.

The stream takes its name from Anthony Oliff, an early settler of West Orange whose family shaped the development of surrounding communities. Today visitors can learn about these connections through signs placed along the trail that explain the local heritage.

The trail along the stream features ten interactive signs with QR codes that allow visitors to access historical information through mobile devices. Using a smartphone at these stops makes it easy to learn about the waterway's heritage while walking.

Two branches of the stream meet near the elevated railroad tracks at Bellevue, with one section called Tunnel Brook originating from a cliff. This geological feature creates an unusual convergence point that sets this location apart.
