West Fourth Street Courts, athletic venue in Manhattan, New York

West Fourth Street Courts, also called The Cage by locals, is a public outdoor basketball court in Manhattan's Greenwich Village neighborhood. The compact space features regulation-height rims and a metal-fenced enclosure that creates an intense playing environment where physical contact is common during games.

The courts have existed for many decades as a neighborhood gathering spot for basketball players. The West Fourth Street League was established by Kenny Graham, bringing organized tournaments that attracted tens of thousands of spectators each summer and transforming the location into a legendary streetball venue.

The courts are known locally as The Cage and serve as a gathering place where basketball players from the neighborhood come together to compete and socialize. The informal tournament culture here celebrates street basketball as a meaningful part of city life.

The courts are located next to the West Fourth Street subway station served by multiple train lines, making them easy to reach by public transit. Plan to visit in late afternoon or on weekends when games are most active and spectators gather to watch the play.

The court was compact enough to be recreated in the video game NBA Street V3, and players sometimes describe the physical play here as resembling a steel-cage wrestling match. Former NBA players like Anthony Mason and Smush Parker developed their street basketball skills on this exact court.
