The construction of this residence between 1924 and 1925 followed a fire that destroyed the previous wooden Queen Anne style governor's mansion in 1921.

The mansion's reception foyer displays a distinctive checkered pattern created with black Belgium marble and white Tennessee marble, reflecting American governmental architectural traditions.

Visitors can schedule free guided tours of the mansion at 1716 Kanawha Boulevard East through advance reservations with the West Virginia Department of Arts.

The mansion's dual staircases draw inspiration from the White House design, while the drawing room contains trompe l'oeil painted wall panels.
