William H. McGuffey House

The William H. McGuffey House is a two-story brick building with a gabled roof and a porch supported by four Tuscan columns. Located on the Miami University campus, it now houses a museum with exhibits about McGuffey's educational textbooks and their impact on American learning.

The building was constructed in 1833 when McGuffey began living here and writing his famous school textbooks. These books spread rapidly through American schools and shaped how many generations of students learned.

The house shows how a teacher and author lived in America during the 1800s. The rooms contain furniture and objects from that time, revealing how people worked and learned in daily life.

The house is located on the university campus and is easily reached from Spring Street. Visitors should check opening hours ahead of time, as access may be limited and the building might not be open on weekends.

The building displays unusual Gothic drip molding on the side gables, which sets it apart from other houses of that era. These architectural details are often overlooked by visitors but show how the builder mixed design styles in a creative way.
