Winnekenni Castle, Stone castle house in Haverhill, Massachusetts.

Winnekenni Castle is a stone house on a hill above Kenoza Lake in Haverhill, Massachusetts. The property sits within a large conservation area crossed by woodland hiking trails.

Dr. James R. Nichols, a local chemist, had the building constructed between 1873 and 1875 as a summer retreat, working with architect C. Willis Damon. The Winnekenni Foundation later took over stewardship of the property and has managed it since.

The castle functions as a community venue where the Winnekenni Foundation hosts seasonal festivals and cultural events for local residents. These gatherings have become an important part of the region's social calendar.

The building itself is currently closed for renovation work, but the surrounding park and trails are open to visitors at no cost. It is worth checking with the local Parks Department before visiting to confirm current conditions.

The name Winnekenni comes from an Algonquin word meaning 'very beautiful,' chosen by the original owner for his property. The building was designed to look like a Norman castle, which makes it stand out in a way that feels out of place in the New England countryside.
