Winnekenni Castle

Winnekenni Castle is a stone structure positioned on elevated terrain overlooking Kenoza Lake within a 700-acre conservation property. The grounds feature multiple hiking trails that wind through the surrounding woodland landscape.

Local chemist Dr. James R. Nichols constructed this summer residence between 1873 and 1875, collaborating with architect C. Willis Damon on its design. The building emerged as a private retreat during a period of rapid industrial growth in the region.

The castle functions as a community venue where the Winnekenni Foundation hosts seasonal festivals and cultural events for local residents. These gatherings have become an important part of the region's social calendar.

The building is currently closed for rehabilitation, but visitors can freely explore the surrounding park grounds and outdoor trails. Contact the Parks Department for current information about access points and any seasonal restrictions on the property.

The name derives from Algonquin and means 'very beautiful,' a description chosen by the original owner to capture the property's scenic qualities. This linguistic origin reflects how deeply the founder connected the estate's natural setting to its identity.
