Holla Bend National Wildlife Refuge

Holla Bend National Wildlife Refuge is a large natural area along the Arkansas River with diverse habitats. The landscape combines wetlands, forests, and grasslands situated between the river channel and an oxbow lake.

The refuge was established in 1957 after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers transferred land to protect wildlife. The creation followed river modifications that were made to improve navigation for watercraft.

The refuge serves as an educational center where visitors learn about wildlife conservation through observation towers, interpretive panels, and guided programs.

Most visitors come by car and use observation towers and walking trails for wildlife viewing. Bring sturdy shoes since some paths cross through wet terrain and can be muddy.

The refuge becomes a major stopover for massive flocks of migrating birds during winter months following the Mississippi Flyway route. Bird watchers travel here during these months to observe the seasonal influx of avian visitors.
