Riverside Park Dance Pavilion, dance hall in Merrick County, Nebraska

The Riverside Park Dance Pavilion is a one-story wood building with a curved roof and large north-facing opening where bands performed. Inside sits a spacious wooden dance floor with a small seating and refreshment area, creating a simple and welcoming gathering space.

The pavilion was built in 1940 to save the nearby park, which had lost visitors and revenue during the Great Depression. The opening gala drew about 370 couples and quickly made the site a popular dance destination for people from multiple states.

The pavilion served as the social center of Merrick County, symbolizing community connection and shared joy in music and dance. People from the region gathered here to maintain and celebrate their cultural traditions through regular dance events.

The building is preserved for viewing from the exterior, though set visiting hours are not currently listed. The location at 1730 Riverside Road is easy to find and the park offers green space and trees for a relaxed visit.

The pavilion is a rare surviving example of an unchanged dance hall from the 1940s era, making it one of very few remaining dance venues that show how common such gathering places once were in communities. Most similar structures from that time have disappeared or been significantly altered.
