Jefferson County Courthouse

The Georgian style building features red brick walls, a prominent Doric pedimented porch, and a square-domed clock tower at 100 East Washington Street.
Built in 1836 to replace an earlier structure from 1803, the courthouse sustained damage during the Civil War and underwent restorations in 1871 and 1910.
The courthouse gained recognition for hosting both the 1859 trial of abolitionist John Brown and the 1922 coal miners' proceedings after the Battle of Blair Mountain.
The building maintains its original function as an active government facility while preserving historical elements, including the 1872 courtroom with modern audio equipment.
The National Historic Landmark designation in December 2023 acknowledges the courthouse's connection to mining conflicts and significant legal proceedings in American history.
