Biddeford Pool, Tidal pool in coastal Maine, United States.
Biddeford Pool is a tidal pool on the coast of Maine, set along Saco Bay and shaped like a natural harbor. A narrow channel called The Gut connects it to the open sea, and strong tidal currents keep it deep throughout the year.
In the winter of 1616, a physician named Richard Vines settled here and called the place Winter Harbor, making it one of the earliest European settlements in Maine. The area later grew into a small fishing community and, by the 19th century, attracted wealthy summer visitors.
The East Point Sanctuary, at the tip of the peninsula, draws people who come to watch seabirds and coastal wildlife through the seasons. Depending on the time of year, different species gather along the shore and on the water.
Conditions here change significantly with the tides, so it is worth checking a local tide chart before heading out. Visiting at low tide gives the clearest view of the shoreline formations and the The Gut channel.
Three concrete platforms from World War II remain visible on the peninsula, where artillery guns once stood as part of a coastal defense network. These structures serve as a reminder that the pool and its surroundings played a military role during the war.
