Adams Street Shul, Modern Orthodox Jewish synagogue in Nonantum, Newton, US

Adams Street Shul is a synagogue in Newton's Nonantum neighborhood featuring Romanesque Revival architecture. The single-story brick building displays a distinctive round-arch entry door and a Star of David oculus window above.

The synagogue was founded in 1912 by Ukrainian immigrants and served as Newton's only Jewish house of worship for many years. Its establishment met the needs of a growing Jewish community in the area.

The name reflects its connection to Ukrainian Jewish heritage, which shaped the community in Newton. The interior craftsmanship still shows this cultural background through details that remain visible today.

The building is easy to find in a residential neighborhood and impresses visitors with well-maintained exterior details. For visits to the interior, check about service times in advance since public access depends on scheduled gatherings.

The interior has remained largely unchanged since its founding, with original components carefully preserved through the decades. A Jewish-Ukrainian artisan created the Torah ark and bema in 1924, craftsmanship that later influenced designs in other houses of worship.
