The Roanoke Apartments complex consists of seven brick buildings with glass block panels and horizontal banding at 1402 Maiden Lane.
Built in 1950 to accommodate World War II veterans' families, the complex became the largest apartment development in Roanoke at that time.
The residential complex transformed into a multicultural center, housing refugees from Somalia, Bosnia, Afghanistan, Cuba, Haiti, and numerous other nations.
The renovation project completed in 2009 modernized the facility while maintaining historical features, reducing the total number of units to 201.
The complex received $9 million in historic and low-income housing tax credits for renovations after its National Register listing in 2006.
