Lower Shawneetown, Archaeological site in Greenup County, United States
The excavation site spans both sides of the Ohio River, containing remnants of Native American settlements from the 18th century and earlier periods.
Established in 1730, Lower Shawneetown grew into a settlement of over 1,200 inhabitants by 1755, making it the second largest Native American community in Ohio Country.
Archaeological findings at the site include tools, pottery, and structures that demonstrate the advanced agricultural and trading practices of the Shawnee people.
Visitors can access the archaeological site through guided tours that explain the excavation methods and documented findings from different historical periods.
The settlement featured a 90-foot-long council house where tribal leaders gathered to make decisions and conduct diplomatic meetings with French and British traders.
