Lower Shawneetown, Archaeological site in Greenup County, United States
Lower Shawneetown was a settlement spanning both sides of the Ohio River that contains remains of dwellings, tools, and pottery from multiple centuries. The archaeological layers reveal different phases of occupation at this location.
The settlement began in the 1730s and grew into a large community with hundreds of residents. It declined in the second half of the 1700s as population moved to other areas.
The site served as a major trading hub where different peoples of the region met to exchange goods and establish agreements. This central location made it a place where networks of commerce and diplomacy came together.
The site is most accessible when you research conditions ahead of time, as archaeological sites often have limited access. Wear comfortable shoes since the ground can be uneven and the area spans a large territory.
Excavations revealed a large wooden council building where community leaders gathered to discuss matters. The structure was unusually sizeable for its era, indicating a well-organized society.
