Masonic Temple, Masonic temple in Worcester, Massachusetts
The Masonic Temple is a three-story Classical Revival building at 1 Ionic Avenue featuring eight Ionic columns and rounded arch windows on its main facade. It serves as a regular meeting place for several Masonic organizations including Morning Star Lodge, Worcester Chapter of Demolay, and Scottish Rite Valley of Worcester.
Construction began in September 1913 with the cornerstone placement, and dedication ceremonies took place in September 1914 under Grand Master Melvin Johnson. This marked the completion of a major Masonic institution that remains active more than a century later.
The building contains specialized rooms designed in different styles: a Grecian room on the second floor, an Egyptian room on the third floor, and a Gothic chapel. These distinct spaces reveal how Freemasons incorporate different architectural traditions into their ceremonial practices.
The building is accessible from several entrances and located in a central part of Worcester with adequate parking nearby. Visitors should know that access to specific areas and events depends on membership or prior arrangement with local Masonic organizations.
The building houses the Worcester 32nd Degree Masonic Learning Center for Dyslexia, which combines traditional fraternal operations with specialized educational support. This unusual program demonstrates how the institution has extended its mission beyond social gathering into community service.
