Friend-Hack House, Historical residence in Milan, Michigan.
The Friend-Hack House is a residence built in Stick style located on County Street in Milan, featuring clapboard siding, decorative kingposts beneath the gables, and long verandahs wrapping around the main building. The property spreads across more than an acre and includes several outbuildings such as a wash house, outhouse, carriage house, stable, and chicken coop.
The house was built after Olive Friend moved to Milan following her husband's death in 1888. Subsequently, William Henry Hack purchased the property from his niece Olive, uniting both family names in the home's designation.
The house carries the names of two families whose lives shaped its story and character. Visitors can still see evidence of these residents in the preserved rooms and displays throughout the building.
The property is accessible on foot and invites exploration of both the main house and the several outbuildings scattered across the grounds. To fully appreciate the layout, take time to walk around and observe how the different structures relate to one another.
The property preserves multiple original outbuildings that reveal the working infrastructure of a household from an earlier era. These structures such as the stable and chicken coop offer visitors insight into the self-sufficiency that these households once relied upon.
