Iowa Juvenile Home, Correctional facility in Toledo, Iowa
The Iowa Juvenile Home was a rehabilitation facility on a campus in Toledo that housed young people between ages 12 and 18. The facility provided education, counseling, and specialized care for residents who needed support and treatment.
The facility opened in 1920 as an orphanage and later became a state institution serving delinquent girls and children needing care. It closed in 2014 after decades of operation.
The facility emphasized treatment-based rehabilitation programs instead of traditional correctional methods, setting it apart from other juvenile institutions in Iowa.
The facility is no longer in operation and cannot be visited. Those interested in its history should contact local archives or Toledo's tourism office for more information.
Following its closure, Iowa became the only state without a dedicated facility for girls in the juvenile justice system. Young people from the state were subsequently placed in out-of-state institutions.
