Chilkat State Park, State park in Haines Borough, United States
Chilkat State Park covers 9,837 acres of peninsula land positioned between two major inlets, featuring dense forests, mountain slopes, and tidal coastlines. The park protects this mix of habitats in their natural condition.
The Alaska Legislature created the park in May 1970, starting with roughly 6,000 acres that were later expanded through land donations and additional legislation. This gradual growth strengthened protections for the entire region.
The Tlingit people maintain a strong presence in this region, with their art, stories, and ceremonies continuing in the communities nearby.
The park provides 35 campsites and 4 walk-in spots equipped with basic facilities including a boat launch, pit toilets, and water access. Visitors should prepare for changing weather and varied ground conditions throughout the park.
This area functions as a critical spawning site for multiple salmon species in southeast Alaska, giving visitors rare chances to watch fish migrations unfold in their natural cycle. Different salmon runs occur at different times, each supporting particular wildlife.
