Lake Mountain Alpine Resort is a nordic ski area in the high country of Victoria, Australia, set on a mountain saddle at roughly 4,700 feet (1,433 m) above sea level. It offers an extensive network of groomed cross-country ski trails, snowshoe routes, and toboggan runs.
The area was named after a surveyor called George Lake, though there are no actual lakes on the mountain itself. The main visitor centre opened in 2004, and after severe bushfires in 2009 destroyed most buildings, the resort reopened for that same winter season.
The resort sits about a two-hour drive from Melbourne through the Yarra Valley, and a personal vehicle is the most practical way to reach it. Arriving early in the day is a good idea, as parking near the entrance fills up on busy snow days.
Despite its name, Lake Mountain has no actual lake anywhere on it, and the name likely comes from a surveyor rather than any body of water. The only water features are small marshy patches on Echo Flat, a level area about 2 miles (3 km) from the summit.
