Burg Grünenfels, Medieval castle ruin in Grisons, Switzerland

The remaining walls of Burg Grünenfels stand on a rocky hill above the Waltensburg gorge, featuring the structure of a pentagonal building.

The Grünenfels noble family controlled the castle during the 13th century until Margareta von Grünenfels married Heinrich von Montalt, transferring ownership to his family.

The castle represents the medieval fortification architecture of the Grisons region, reflecting the power dynamics between noble families and religious institutions.

The municipality of Waltensburg purchased the castle in 1734, incorporating it into communal property where visitors can explore the medieval ruins.

Brothers Heinrich and Albert von Grünenfels engaged in conflicts with Disentis Monastery, leading to intervention by Pope Nicholas III in 1278.
