Burg Grünenfels

Burg Grünenfels is a medieval castle ruin perched high above the Waltensburg gorge in Grisons. Walls of the pentagonal structure still stand, revealing the layout of the former fortress.

The castle was founded and controlled by the Grünenfels family in the 13th century. When Margareta of Grünenfels married Heinrich von Montalt, the castle passed to the Montalt family.

The ruin reflects the military architecture common in medieval mountain regions where fortifications controlled key passages. You can still observe how strategically it sits on the rock above the gorge.

The ruin sits on a rocky hill and is best reached on foot in sturdy shoes. The path offers views of the gorge and surrounding land, though exploring the site requires care on uneven ground.

The brothers Heinrich and Albert of Grünenfels clashed with Disentis Monastery, drawing papal attention to their disputes. This conflict reveals how deeply worldly and religious power were intertwined in the alpine region.
