Bipp Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Oberbipp, Switzerland.
Bipp Castle is a medieval fortification at the foot of the Jura Mountains with preserved ruins, a manor house, farm buildings, and several residential structures. The complex features a large residential building on the eastern side connected to a round tower on the western side through additional structures.
The castle was first documented in 1268 when Hartmann von Froburg recorded it as a family possession in written form. It changed hands between several noble families over subsequent centuries, indicating its importance as a regional center of power.
The site's name comes from an old word meaning marshy ground, reflecting the local landscape that shaped settlement patterns. Walking through the grounds, you can see how different family groups lived and worked together within a single fortified space.
The grounds are located on Schlossstrasse in Oberbipp and are accessible from outside, giving you views of the medieval structures and the 1855 manor house. The best time to visit is during warmer months when the paths are drier and easier to walk.
The site holds Class A status in Switzerland's cultural property registry, protected because it demonstrates how architecture evolved over multiple centuries. This designation makes it an important record of building traditions in the region.
